More speakers makes sense, but when they are so close together, I think most reasonable reviewers will say the same thing, it's hard to tell a difference between true surround sound of trittons and the digital surround sound of turtle beaches.
So that shouldn't be your concern, and if you go to comfort and durability, turtle beaches win in most reviews.
But, in comparing stereo to surround sound, I have been wondering the same thing myself.
I have the turtle beach x11's lasted me over a year now with no signs of wear and tear. Though I never rage, rip them, throw them, trip over wires, or anything. That kind of stuff will break any headset.
It's hard to find people comparing that who don't just say "no surround sound is definitely better". Finding someone who knows sound quality, compares both side by side, etc, is tough.
But really, surround sound in a headset, can't be amazing, it's only to speakers (even with trittons, it amounts to two speakers because of the close proximity. Though I do believe the sound would be of slightly higher quality, as the ear is a small and precise organ, could tell those differences, but still, only minor improvement.)
My opinion, save your money, we got enough things to buy in this world. With headsets, you can still assess someones location, just slight turns left and right, does the sound come more from the left cup or right cup, then you know.
It'll still be a great improvement from regular stereo tv sound.
