So is my ping of 104 raping me or not? I see Some people saying it's all about connection and some saying it doesn't matter because of lag comp. I've been doing some research on internet speeds and I still don't get it.

Anything above 50ms shouldn't be acceptable IMO
older games managed to give you a better connection than what CoD is offering. I don't accept any excuses from IW for this mess.

FPS games are very fast paced especially CoD and the gun fights don't last very long. Every bullet counts, but some of them just disappear. This wouldn't be acceptable in a strategy game and it shouldn't be happening in FPS games.

So basically my ping of 104ms is putting me a half of a second behind someone with a normal connection. My connection seems decent at 11 down and 2 up, so why is my ping so terrible?

Re: How important is connection? 1 year, 2 months ago #666357

I honestly feel like I'm screwed over since I'm host in most lobbies. Kinda infuriating shooting a shotgun and dying only to see in the killcam that the game says you didn't shoot. This game should not be this damn laggy.

Agreed. When playing alone, I will leave after the 50ms search completes and try again. I won't even let it search for 75ms games.

I refuse to play this game after EVERY SINGLE LOBBY has paired me with splitscreeners on a 100 ping connection. Being a second behind everyone is too frustrating to play on.

It's worst in MW3.

A 4bar in COD4/MW2/BO meant you had a solid connection the only ones that lagged were lesser connections and unless they were skipping you had the advantage which to me was perfectly fair.

Now in MW3 4bar vs anything less then a 4bar your doomed as the stronger connection.

Completely true. 4bar gave me a good connection in cod4 and blops but in mw3 4bar can mean i have an awful connection. somehow with 2 bar it seems to be slightly better but really the connection is the single most important thing in any online competitive game like this

Re: How important is connection? 1 year, 2 months ago #666667

I'm connection retarded. I did a ping test before to the same server and it said I had 13ms of ping. I don't see how it jumped to 48ms. And I know how ping affects playing video games, but not entirely sure what upload and download does to it.

This is somewhere close to me.

I decided to do one to LA since me and Charlie play quite a bit.

Why do I have a higher upload to LA than to somewhere I'm closer to?

After going to my friend's house, I felt like this thread needs a necro bump. His download is twice as fast as mine, and the game really reflected it.(it was only 16 down compared to 8, but still) The hit detection felt amazing, people weren't shooting back, and theater mode showed my PP90M1 killing in literally 2 bullets. This wasn't just from my point of view either. He went to my house and he said it felt terrible compared to his connection.

Connection is just as important as being 'good'.

Trying to understand how your connection affects your game is a mystery.

When im in a party i tend to lag a shit tonne.

This weekend i played dom with a full party and could not hit a thing, all my stats plummeted.

The party ended so i thought id try some solo, low and behold the game significantly improved.

If you have great internet you might have lag, you might not. if you have crap internet you may have lag comp, you may not, if you in a party you might have a good connection, you may not...

I think id have more luck in figuring out exactly how women work than understanding how this game works.

Where were the guys in the party from, if they are in another continent than you than no wonder because they have a better chance of pulling host, My connection is great in a party because I only play with people that live within 10 miles of me

it doesnt really make a huge difference on mw3, a good player will still do well on a bad connection, a good connection will just prevent an occasional death when you're rushing around and you an an enemy start shooting at similar times.
The only time is actually makes a big difference is when its lagging too much to even move. Like sometimes on black ops i couldn't actually walk through a door sometimes because my connection was so bad. On mw3 its not quite as bad an i still did pretty well with a 1md down, 0.8mb up.
So basically a bad player cant use his connection as an excuse.

No, connection isn't as important as you think it is. If so, why can a player do well on a 3 bar?

HA! THIS!!! lag comp makes no sense in this game and i feel at the mercy of it most times.

there are times when i absolutely just cannot win a gun fight, even when they are not facing me, im shooting on target, they turn and kill me. that has nothing to do with skill.

I know you and albino have bad connections , but you're still 2 of the best players i know connection helps at certain times, but its far from the most important thing in being good at the game. I think its about making less mistakes and good positioning.

Okay maybe...not i exaggerated when i made that post.

Having a good connection can improve you as a player from a strong player to an all out beast. Better?

connection doesn't really matter IMO. I play with people from england all the time and i am on a 3 bar. it holds me back from rushing to my usual standard and being confident in picking people off at a consistent rate. but it doesn't affect my k/d for games as much.

my friend decided to let me host for once so that he is the one with the 2/3 bar and he ended up going 24-22 and saying i can never host for pubs again while i went 62-8 or something like that lmao.

All I know for sure is that I have played on friends setups with a worse connection and ping then me and have done worse, and i have played on friends setup with a better connection and ping, and done better. I also say that backops was all about up and download performace, where as mw3 is more afffected by how your ping is. just my observation!!
I think the massive difference in a individuals performance regarding how well they do is adapting their play style regarding their strengths AND limitations. A smart player with a bad connection will be disciplined enough to play within his boundaries, not playing dumb. A guy with a bad connection and great stats and performance is a clever player and should be respected for how they play the game overall.
Would they do much better with an excellent connection? wierdly i dont think so. They know how to get them most out of what they have. COD does have its levellers implaced in the geem. thats why we dont see people with 6 plus kds hardly ever. the difference between just a 1 or 2 kd or a 2 and 3 kd is vast. real skill can be put in the 3kd plus bracket. and it generally tops out at 4.5 or around there. how many times have you seen real stats better then that on people with time played over a few days? Dont tell me some of them arent of the rare breed of excellent players WITH great internet. I think there just is a ceiling to how good you can get at one thing. And a great player can seek that out regardless of what he does or doesnt have. Im sure its harder to do with crappy connection though!!!

Am I good at COD? No. Am I a good team mate? Yes.
Am I a bit old to be gaming? Yes. Am I a saddo? Yes.

Yep Lag sucks and is very important, it can make a good player a beast player if they have a good connection or it can make them look like a noob with a bad one.
Ping is the most important thing to look for, as said earlier if matchmaking tries to put you in a lobby with a ping of over 50ms then leave.
You may need to open all the ports to your console, the easiest way to do this is to put your console in DMZ mode on your routers settings. Google search or Youtube DMZ for Xbox/PS3 and you will find instructions.
Avoid Head on gun fights, if you can flank your enemy and shoot them in the side or back you'll do a lot better. Otherwise your just gonna get frustrated watching killcams of a guy seeing you almost a whole second before you see him. Or dying and then watching a guy run around a corner after he's killed you.
This is the most in depth explanation of connection I've seen on the tube;
