If we are talking FREE FREE then most likely LOTRO but you can by the GuildWars Trilogy on Amazon for like 40ish bucks + shipping and i think like 35 at target which is a great deal al you have to od is buy the game
Maplestory looks like it's for kids but it's really quite fun. League of Legends is the most fun game i've played in a long, long time. But it's more strategy-based than normal MMO's... In fact it's not really an MMO... Still fun.

I have a few friends that play Rapplez, or something. They said they like it, and yes it is free, free. You can pay a little of extra money for little extras, but essentially, it is free.

Guild Wars. Great Game. and it's free. Guild Wars 2 is comming out soon though... at least they say early 2011 at this point. Also, I have a crappy computer and it can run it acually pretty good so I wouldn't worry about your computer stats just incase you wanted to know.

If you like manga and games that dont take them self too serious i whould like to recomend Dragonica.
Here's a lil' gameplay video if you're intrested :
Basicly it's a 2D side scrolling MMO-RPG with a friendly manga theme.
The combat system is just flawless, it's so addictive trying too get the highest combo, wich you will be awarded with i many diffrent ways along the game...
But also there are the standard things, there are quests, a decent Dungeon PVE system and a cool fast phased PVP battleground option.
4 classes, with uniqe spell and looks... Or well, there are actually more then 4 classes. Let's say you pick a warrior for a starter character. Once you reach lvl 20 you get too pick a new class, in the warriors case your picks whould be gladiator or knight. And this keeps on going ever 20'th level. So make your own idividual class that you're comferable playing with is easy as pie!
Guess i can't tell you more without takeing all fun out of it, so just try it for yourself it's free too download and too play, just googel Dragonica and you should find your way too it.
Hope this post helped you, and sorry for all the typos, It's like 5 in the morning here in Sweden... I just dont seem to be able too leave the computer tonight... *sigh*

Global Agenda. Dunno if it's the best but it's the one I personally play most these days.
It's more of an sci-fi mmo \ shooter than swinging swords. Also has free trial so worth giving a shot if you are into scifi-rpg-shooters.

I suggest not picking up GuildWars considering GW2 is right around the corner. (2011ish)
GW2 is looking amazing right now, but if you are set on getting GW buy EoTN expansion, this will let you get some extra goodies in GW2.
(Due to your HoM)
Peace.

Guild Wars is a lobby-based instance running game. Think Diablo or Diablo II, except the lobby is a 3-D town. You can play with other people or with NPCs that assist you on the missions. There is a pretty shallow level cap (level 20 if I remember correctly), and the focus is learning tons of skills and equiping them in different combinations in order to differentiate your character.
The graphics are a bit dated, the gameplay is fairly interesting.
Here's the catch: To access some content, you have to buy an expansion or 4. I'm not sure if they have a large "Warchest" edition similar to what Blizzard does with their older games, but it can get pricey.
LOTR:O is great if you were a fan of either the books or the movies. It puts you into a parallel journey with the main storyline, and a lot of the added content is really quite fun. It drives like WoW, but has enough uniqueness to not be a true clone.
Ragnarok Online servers still exist, and a lot of my old MMO mates love it, though I never have tried it.
Maple Story is supposed to be cool as well, though I've never tried that either.
Dungeons & Dragons Online is one I'm looking to try, but keep in mind that they stay true to how you level in the pencil and paper version, meaning that the level cap seems low, but it takes time to get there.
Flyff is one that still should be free, but it has a cash shop.
There's also a few other freebie ones at NCSoft's website, they tend to have a few free to play with cash shop options.
Unfortunately, I haven't tried many other freebie MMOs that are still around. I used to play Hellgate: London, but that tanked pretty hard...
I got Guild Wars Trilogy it comes with all the expansion, that I bought of steam for around £15 ($25 I think) I haven't played it that much bought if a group of us bought it then I think it could be quite fun all starting of together and working our way through the game, would anyone be interested in trying it? Or we could all get LOTRO and play that together what do you guys think?
I can only repeat what everyone is saying. Guildwars. I got 1.4k hours clocked into Guildwars and I am around avarage. It's highly addicting and I really recommend it, though it's hard to get into, 'cause most people will see you as a newb and won't team with you. You can quickly solve that by getting a Guild. I recommend starting at the normal Guildwars, hence it's the most fun in my eyes. Then buy factions and nightfall and then start EotN. Then you have atleast 250h clocked into the game. Trust me.
And it's cool to get familiar with Guildwars, 'cause Guildwars 2 will totally oblitirate any other mmo.
I can hook you up with a really fun guild, if you get into the game. Just send me a message and I'll help you and get you familiar with the game.

I played Maplestory for 3/4 years. It looks really childish, but is really fun. The only reason I quit was because I got hacked... and the balance patch makes the game n00b friendly...
