You all forgot to mention MGS ...

Just to say it like xcal did it in his MGS playthrough : No one will remember games like CoD in 20 years. They have such a low lifespan which was made intentionally. Games like MGS or GTA 4 as a modern example will always be remembered and played, because those games are classics. Besides good graphics there is more to a good video game. People still play those games just to know what a classic actually feels like.

Who are the Gods?

Just some of the greatest gaming series known to man.

Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, Sly Cooper and Legend of Zelda, just to name a few.

Sure CoD can push their product, but that doesn't make it popular. It's just got a fanbase filled to the brim with mindless buyers.

You named some genuinely awful games.

Kingdom Hearts? Seriously...?

If anything, the Gods are:

Counter Strike, Half Life, Starcraft, Zelda, Portal, Pokemon.

Personally I don't get what the big deal about Counter Strike (just seems like another of the thousands of shooters out there) and Starcraft (meh, RTS's aren't all that fun tbh) is and Pokemon was only good up to the 3-4th generation. After that it just got too repetitive and stale, but too each his own I guess.

And yes. Kingdom Hearts is very awesome series.

in England Fifa is probably as big as if not bigger than CoD, at least where I live and the people I know, although it would make sense that it's the little kids who play CoD the most, once you hit 14-ish, CoD becomes less appealing as it did to me

Counter Strike is the longest living, most successful FPS ever in terms of the competitive scene and consistency.

Starcraft is probably the most difficult to master competitive videogame on the planet and is probably the most hotly contested pro-scene in gaming.

Pokemon is incredible. We don't talk of the later games. They are blasphemy.

Kingdom Hearts was distinctly meh. Really generic gameplay, at least from what I remember.

CS has many flaws in it's mechanics. Nothing compared to CoD, but they are still there.

However the game can be played as you like it. You can play custom made zombie modes, climbing modes, surfing modes etc. or you can play it competitively. The game has a huge potential which comes basically from the community like in Little Big Planet. The lifespan of such games is endless as long as the community comes up with new ideas.

I don't know about you, but I play for the story first. Yea, Kingdom Hearts was hack n slash, but it's story was one of the greatest. The way the characters interacted with each other and how they developed was very well done.

Again, I don't see what the big deal is about those two games. Probably because I don't give two shits about the "competitive" scene. And I know Pokemon was incredible. There is no denying that.

Still, like I said, I play a game for it's story first. Then I worry about all the other stuff.

You say it has many flaws in it's mechanics, but I'd say they're more idiosyncrasies. There is nothing in CSS where you think "Man, that was bullshit", to be honest. It's just very, very solid.

I'm not talking about simple things like recoil or movement speed, but things that change the flow and feel to the game.

For one CS is a game that can compliment campers. I've won many camping matches or as we called it in the German competitive scene low-bobbing matches.
It's way easier to lock down a whole road with a AWP or a very precise weapon ( Steyr AUG or FAMAS for example )

Other things like the emphasis on team play is rather low in CS. It's just importent to rack up as many kills as you can in a round. You don't really need a team tactic to succeed. There are some little things like checking how many guys went to A or B, but other than call outs the game focuses on the individual. Some people like this especially in pubs, but I prefer a well organised tactic instead of " one guy gets the shotty and we all rush for B bomb and lock it down".

i guess popular kind of depends on who you ask, personally except for some guys from hupit i know literally nobody that has played COD after the first one (which in my opinion was the only decent one in the series)

CS only started as a Mod. It's stand-alone now.

Bit like DoTA

Which bring me to the fact that everyone though WoW would never stop growing and even things like Angry Birds have out sold it

Probably, sooner or later.

One just has to find the thin line between catering to everyone and not pissing off one's customers to the degree that they won't buy the next game. Ding dong loads emoney.

But I very much agree with g0ggy. I don't think CoD is a game that will be looked back at in the future like many other games.

I.e the older CoD games has nowhere near the percentage of active players in the newer games as CS 1.6 vs CS:S has.

I'll use my analogy again: CoD is the fast food of gaming, while games with better lasting power are gourmet meals

Will there ever be?
If you want the smart ass response then technically the answer can't be no? In a hundred years there may not have been one but given an infinite time frame then yes, there will be.
It's like the monkeys in a room with typewriters. They'll write Shakespeare (or whatever you want) eventually, when given infinite time.

My actual response: Yeah, I think there will be in the not so distant future.

OP, what do you mean by popular?

We got people saying Kingdom Hearts, Jak and Daxter and Portal are forever better, which wasn't really the question. None of those titles have ever been more popular than CoD.
Check out my blog, it\'s suprisingly dull: welshboymick.wordpress.com

I see your forum post is using logic? Too bad you\'re on Hupit, where logic isn\'t accepted as a valid premiss to an argument.

Actually this isn't true

For this argument to apply you need to prove that a game more popular than CoD could exist. If the event is impossible, then no amount of monkeys, however well equipped, will produce it. It's like saying that an infinite number of monkeys in a room with typewriters will eventually produce orange juice. They won't since, last I checked, typewriters don't spew juice out of the paper feed slot.

Nice
I'm not sure about any kind of 'proof', but I assumed it would be pretty much accepted that a game more popular than CoD could assist. I mean, I'm pretty sure my sister hasn't heard of Cod as well of millions of other people. I don't think it's a global franchise to the extent of McDonalds or Coke. Define 'popular' I guess..?

By popular i mean the number of sales all around the world, number of people playing regularly etc even a large part of youtube is dedicated to CoD. Hupit was also created mainly for CoD and has over 100,000 members when i last checked.
I cant think of any games that have had such a big impact

You need to watch your choice of words.

Saying things like "I cant think of any games that have had such a big impact" is just inviting the discussion to go wildly off topic and into the realm of the most influential games of all time as opposed to the most popular (I'd like to say that CoD doesn't even get close to getting on that list, by the way).

It must have had a fairly big impact for so many people to buy and play it so much. I mean its not like starcraft 2, or WoW where people dedicate their lives to it, but as a whole I'd say the series as a whole has had one of the biggest impacts on the gaming community.
What other games were you thinking that have had more?

I hate using the term popular and saying that is sales.

Majority of us bought COD and either quit early on,hardly play it any more,or still play it.

Popularity shouldn't be sales numbers,Plenty of movies have made a lot of money and were some of the worst but you hype it enough people will go watch it. Or in this case play the game.

The thing with COD is you can't go rent the game and try it out. And you can judge the game from 5 matches. You have to spend some time in it to get your opinion of the game.

The game will sell, someone will eventually sell as much as it if not more(maybe not soon) but it will. Does anyone have current numbers on pokemon? I know that game has almost become a PC game in terms of people getting it for free on Roms.

Sales are good showing, but popularity some games you have 0 idea how many people are actually playing the game, and ENJOYING it. If the game isn't enjoyable to the majority of people then it shouldn't be considered popular. Only difference with COD is,most people have another COD game to fall back onto that they did enjoy.

A majority of people who have played enjoy it for the most part, that's why people keep coming back again and again. They say they don't but that would only be because of recent BS that happened in the game to make them rage.
By the way, i know you used to play a lot of CoD, but what made you stop?
And yeah pokemon was one of the best games I've played, and when i stop playing video games, im sure my memories of pokemon will be the best

Impact?

Well let's see:

Half Life (Set the standard for single player games)
Counter Strike (Set the standard for competitive FPS)
Age of Empires (The go-to for RTS)
World of Warcraft (Popularised pay-per-play gaming)
Starcraft (Benchmark for RTS)
Diablo (Solidified the top down adventure market)
Mario (One of the most iconic games, a standard of every generation)
Zelda (See above)
Doom (One of gaming's early starters. Paved the way for others.)
Quake (Another game-changer, introduced one of the most important engines ever)
Unreal Tournament (See above)
StarFox (One of the earliest 3D games)
Mortal Kombat (One of the first beat-em-ups. Pushed the idea of character individuality.)
Street Fighter (See above)
Battlefield (Set the groundwork for competitive PC FPS, like CS)
Wii Fit (Founded casual gaming in the public eye)
DotA (Popularised the MOBA genre)
Crysis (Set the standard for next gen visuals)

This is a very small collection of the games which have had a larger IMPACT than CoD. You are not arguing impact, like I said, you're arguing popularity. Do not mention impact if you want this thread to stay at all on topic.
